In the previous episodes, we have already talked about product development and selling a product/service. For this episode, we will focus on another core strength of every business and delve deeper into the customer or target audience.

So how can we find the people who will buy your stuff?

There is no one way to advertise and sell your product and we need to look into the following levels of accurately and successfully identifying your target audience.

Demographics

This refers to gender, income bracket, age, location, occupation, that sort of thing. These are things that we can easily determine. Depending on the factors mentioned earlier, you would need to adjust the way you talk to your customers.

Psychographics

This encompasses family, health, lifestyle, values, personalities, traits, and interests. This goes a lot deeper than demographics because it goes into what people like doing.

Pain points

This talks about what your customers’ needs are. What would be their motivation to purchase your product? How can your product solve their pain points? Purchasing your product should help make your customers who they already are or more of who they want to be.

Behaviour

Are people aware about your product? Do they already use it? What is their response to it? Their knowledge, attitude and response to the product indicates the behaviour of your target audience. It will also let you know how you can make them love your product more.

Intersection

This refers to where your customers or target audience hang out and meeting your customers where they are. It’s not geography based. It can either be in the real world or online.

These 5 levels will help you think deeper about your own business. Ask yourself if you can you easily say who your target audience is? A great way to solidify your target audience is to write a bio for them – give them a name, age etc and tell us all about them. Then when you are creating any product descriptions or copy for your website, write as if you are just talking to that one specific person.

CAN YOU CONFIDENTLY SAY YOU ARE WORKING ON THE RIGHT THING, RIGHT NOW IN YOUR BUSINESS?

Sometimes, even when we are doing all the right things, it can feel like we’re spinning our wheels and not moving forward at all. This could be because you’re focusing on the wrong area of your business – or doing all the right things, but at the wrong time.
